Former State Police Chief Jacob Punnoose has said that these days the police seem to be tainting politicians and not the other way around.

While the police should have the freedom to function independently, such freedom should not be limitless and without any control. Instead of becoming “yes men”, they should be able to efficiently act in accordance with the law, he said while speaking on ‘police modernisation in view of recent developments’ organised by the Chavara Cultural Centre on Thursday.

Mr. Punnoose said the police should defer not to superiors, but to the Constitution.

“When they do that, servitude will end. Servitude is tantamount to corruption, and it must end.”

He also said that the aim should be to reduce instances of crimes, and not the number of cases registered. The police, he said, had the responsibility to protect the rights of citizens as enshrined in the Constitution.

RTI activist D.B. Binu presided over the function.
