KOCHI: The city police have promised the Kerala State Commission for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes to conduct an expeditious probe into the “mysterious” death of a person belonging to the SC community from Kakkanad around four years ago.
Commission chairman P.N. Vijayakumar told reporters that the police would submit the probe report in six months. A special team will be formed to investigate the death, he added.
Mr. Vijayakumar was speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a two-day adalat convened by the commission to hear petitions pending before it.
The chairman said the body of Shaji, a driver, was found within the Thrikkakara police station limits. His parents had suspected foul play, as there was a deep wound on Shaji’s head. Though a petition was filed, there had been no progress in the case. Shaji’s death was among around 100 mystery death cases over the last 10 years that had come up before the commission, the chairman said.
Meanwhile, a total of 260 petitions were received for consideration during the two-day adalat. Of these, as many as 135 petitions were heard on Thursday, while 125 will be considered on Friday.
The nature of complaints received by the commission varies from region to region, said the chairman. In the Malabar region, most complaints were about apathy on the part of the police when it came to following up on petitions.
Commission members Ezhukon Narayanan and K.K. Mano were present.
