115 sovereigns of gold and ₹1 lakh were stolen from a house

A day after unidentified persons broke into a house near Aluva and took away around 115 sovereigns of gold and ₹1 lakh, the Ernakulam Rural Police have formed a special team to probe the case.

According to officials, multiple teams coordinated under Prafulla Chandran, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Aluva, have also been constituted to probe the case.

The police also interrogated about ten migrant labourers, residing at a nearby labour camp, in connection with the probe.

Investigations so far have pointed to the involvement of a burglary gang. “The teams have fanned out to different parts and we have got certain leads,” said a top officer.

As part of the investigation, Inspector General of Police (Kochi Range) P. Vijayan and Rural Police Superintendent A.V. George visited the house, located near Mahilalayam Junction at Thottumugham. Further, forensic and fingerprint experts and a dog squad also inspected the crime scene and collected evidence.

While examining the crime scene, the police recovered arms, including a couple of pickaxes and swords, purportedly used by the burglars.

Investigations so far have suggested that the burglars first broke the lock of the rear door of the house to get in and then broke the vault.

Abdulla, the houseowner, came to know about the burglary after 8 p.m. on Sunday. He, along with other family members, had gone on a visit to Mambram in Malappuram.

Officials are also looking into the possible involvement of some local elements who might have helped the thieves by monitoring the house and its premises in the previous days.

“It is yet to be known whether the thieves had prior information regarding the valuables inside the house and that the family members would be away for a day,” officials said.
