Special squad to probe theft at house

Stolen valuables include 25 sovereigns of gold

The Kochi City Police on Thursday constituted a special squad to probe the incident in which burglars broke into the house of a former Reserve Bank of India officer near Pathadipalam and decamped with valuables including 25 sovereigns of gold.

District Police Chief (Kochi City) M.P. Dinesh on Thursday visited the crime scene and reviewed the progress of investigation. “Directions have been issued to prepare a list of habitual offenders, who were recently released from jail. The ongoing investigation primarily focuses on those who had stayed at nearby lodges and the shops that are open at night,” officials said.

Further, CCTV visuals from a house in the neighbourhood have been collected for verification.

The theft came to light on Wednesday afternoon when the maid reached the house, which had remained locked for the past two days, and found its front door open. Besides gold jewellery, ₹10,000 in cash, wrist watches, and cellphones were stolen.

The police have recovered an iron rod and a screw driver used by the thieves to break open the house. Preliminary investigations pointed to the involvement of seasoned burglars.
