A memorandum of understanding was signed between the Southern Naval Command and the Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham for academic and research collaboration.

The MoU was signed between Vice Admiral Anil Kumar Chawla, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Southern Naval Command, the training command of the Navy, and P. Venkat Rangan, Vice Chancellor of Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, at the university’s campus in Coimbatore. The MoU would encompass fields of mechanical engineering, electronics and communication, computer science and other areas of mutual interest such as bio-science, medical and cyber security, a defence press release said.

“To leverage the potential of external expertise in different technical domains and to nurture a ‘collaborative training’ model with an aim to provide the [naval] trainees with the highest academic standards, the Navy has reached out and inked memoranda of understanding (MoUs) with some of the best institutions of excellence in the country,” the release said. The first of such MoUs was inked with the Cochin University of Science and Technology (Cusat) in 2002 under which the university recognises the course curriculum of all training establishments and awards M.Tech, M.Sc, postgraduate diploma, B.Sc and diploma certificates to successful trainees.
