The ever developing Thrikkakara municipal area has over the years developed some dense traffic points negotiating which has become an increasingly tough task.

Thrikkakara Residents’ Association Apex Council (TRAAC), an initiative of 50-odd residents’ associations in the area, had submitted countless memorandums suggesting solutions to the MLA, the Collector, traffic police and municipal authorities.

TRAAC president M.S. Anilkumar cited the collectorate, Olimugal Junction, IMG Junction, TV centre and the immediate neighbourhood of collectorate as the major problem areas.

He said introducing free left using a fraction of the land of the collectorate and the Roads and Bridges Development Corporation of Kerala Ltd (RBDCK) would ease the pressure at the Collectorate Junction.

The coming together of five roads has been causing traffic problems at Olimugal Junction on the Seaport-Airport Road.

“One of these roads is rather unimportant and the problem can be solved by making it one-way so that vehicles would not enter the junction through it. Anyway, the road in question provides access to Seaport-Airport Road at another point,” Mr. Anilkumar said.

IMG Junction, a few metres away from the Collectorate Junction, is at present, a meeting point of multiple roads, including the one leading to Infopark campus used by thousands of commuters daily, crisscrossing each other haphazardly. “The Public Works Department can end the traffic woes in the area in no time by setting up a roundabout,” Mr. Anilkumar said.

The point, commonly known as TV Centre, a few metres away from the Cochin Special Economic Zone, where motorists enter the Seaport-Airport Road from Palachuvadu has of late become a very vulnerable zone.

With Palarivattom-Kakkanad Road chock-a-block with traffic, a large number of motorists have been depending on the link road from Palachuvadu making the point where they enter the Seaport-Airport Road a priority area for modification.

The haphazard traffic just outside the exit point of the collectorate also has been creating confusion. Motorists coming from the direction of the Thrikkakara community hall now have to approach the road in front of the exit point of the collectorate and take a U-turn to proceed in the direction of the IMG Junction. Mr. Anilkumar said this unscientific arrangement could be resolved by providing for a free left ahead of the collectorate exit point.
