Several fires were reported in the city and outskirts on Friday.

A large fire was reported from the Government Medical College at Kalamassery on Friday afternoon. Fire and Rescue Services personnel said that the fire broke out in a part of the college campus that was overgrown with weeds. “A fire broke out in the overgrown region of the campus. Fire fighting units from Gandhi Nagar, Eloor, Aluva, and Thrikkakara fought the blaze all afternoon till about 6 p.m. to bring the fire under control,” said an official. As the fire broke out in an abandoned portion of the complex, no one was injured in the blaze, officials said.

A fire also broke out at a pineapple farm near Thengodu around 3 p.m. Officials suspect that someone may have accidentally set the weeds growing on the unused portion of the farm on fire. Two firefighting units from Thrikkakara and Pattimattom fire stations fought the blaze for nearly three hours.

Fire and Rescue Services personnel also rushed to control minor fires reported at Eechamukku, Kusumagir and other parts of the district on Friday. - Staff Reporter
