SEC orders removal of ‘promotional stuff ’

October 09, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:42 am IST - KOCHI:

The State government, local bodies, people’s representatives and political parties have been asked to remove with immediate effect promotional stuff placed at public places and roads hailing their achievements and projects implemented.

The State Election Commission has also asked the government and local bodies to immediately stop publicising their achievements and projects through the media. The district collector has been entrusted with implementing the model code of conduct with police assistance.

A committee chaired by the collector would examine violations of the code of conduct.Actions of political parties, candidates and those occupying positions of power would be closely watched to check potential attempts to influence voters.

Flex out

The State Election Commission has urged political parties to avoid using flex in election campaigning. Since flex emits poisonous gas on being burnt, eco-friendly materials should be used for campaigning, the Commission said.

More police force will be deployed at vulnerable polling booths in the district.

Around 1,000 booths in the district have been identified as vulnerable. In normal booths, one policeman will be deployed.

Not more than a vehicle of the candidate or his entourage will be allowed within hundred metres of the office of the returning officer at the time of filing of nomination, State Election Commission has said.

Candidates should comply with the date and time set for filing of nominations.

Only five persons, including election agent, nominator, and another person authorised in writing, will be allowed alongside the candidate at the time of filing of nominations.

Help desk

A help desk has been set up at the district collectorate to assist those contesting to the district panchayat.

Two officers have also been deployed to distribute nomination papers free of cost to potential candidates. So far, more than ten candidates have made use of the help desk. Thirteen polling stations in the district have been categorised as distant.

Stations without any transportation facility within one kilometre radius are designated as distant ones.

These stations fall in Kadamakkudy in Edappally block panchayat and Kuttampuzha under the Kothamangalam block. While there are six such stations in Kadamakkudy, seven are in Kuttampuzha.

Conveyance in the high range area of Kuttampuzha and the isolated islands in Kadamakkudy can be an ordeal. Special transportation and other facilities are arranged in these areas during all elections.
