Ruling on marriage certificate changes

June 20, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:41 am IST - KOCHI:

The Kerala High Court on Friday held that the entries in the marriage register and the marriage certificate could not be corrected on the whims of the bride and the groom.

Justice K.T. Sankaran observed that cancellation of the entries could be done only if the registrar of marriages was satisfied that an entry was erroneous or fraudulent or it was improperly made.

The court made the ruling while disposing of a writ plea filed by Rijin Rajan of Thrissur, seeking to change the entries made in the register. He said he had registered his marriage with Neethu soon after a betrothal ceremony. His bride was a medical student in Russia. However, his relationship with the family of his bride got strained, and he sought cancellation of the marriage registration.
