Rights panel seeks renovation of Njarackal hospital

October 10, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:41 am IST - KOCHI:

The Human Rights Commission chairman had asked the government why the Njarackal hospital continues to be in a dilapilated condition, for which Rs. 5 crore was sanctioned five years ago.

A statement issued by Justice J. B. Koshy urged the government to take immediate steps to renovate the hospital that caters to the fishermen in the coastal belt.

The Health Secretary, the executive engineer of the buildings wings of the Public Works Department have been directed to appear before the Commission on December 7 with an explanation at the Collectorate conference hall.

The District Medical Officer has also been asked to submit a report on the issue.

The Goshree Island Development Authority had provided Rs. 5 crore in 2011. This was informed by the DMO to the executive engineer of the PWD buildings wing.

But no action has been taken so far to renovate the hospital that was raised to the level of Taluk Hospital in 2010, the statement said.

About 300-400 patients come into the hospital daily, but the infrastructure is in pathetic condition, the Commission chairman was informed by the hospital superintendent.

There is no casualty department in the hospital as there is no medical officer to handle it.

The case was taken up on a complaint filed by N. G. Sivadas, Kerala Prathikarana Vedi.
