The final report on possible solutions to problems associated with the re-alignment of Chengalthodu for developing the Cochin International Airport at Nedumbassery will be submitted to the government soon.
The report prepared by Kitco, a government agency, was discussed at a meeting convened by District Collector K. Mohammed Y. Safirulla here on Saturday. MLAs Roji M. John, Anwar Sadath, heads of various local bodies, and officials of Cochin International Aiport Limited attended, according to an official release.
Projects worth ₹228 crore have been incorporated in the report, and they include a canal and a road in the southern side of the airport, diversion canal in the northern side, bridges on A.P. Varkey Road, drainage systems at Mattoor-Kariyad road, bridge at Puliyampilli, and rejuvenation of Kaithakad creek.
Mr. Safirulla said the local bodies concerned would discuss the proposals. He added that final final decision on the implementation of the projects would be taken by the government.
Meanwhile, elected representatives suggested that Cochin International Airport Limited (CIAL) undertake the implementation of the projects.
The natural flow of Chengalthodu, which served as a distributary of the Periyar, was altered for the construction of the airport. Consequently, rainwater flow was affected resulting in waterlogging, a major reason for the flooding of the airport in August.
