Rare surgery performed

June 09, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:39 am IST - KOCHI:

In a rare surgery termed craniofacial resection, a large cancerous lump was removed from a patient’s nasal bridge, freeing him from the closeted life he had been leading for more than two years.

A statement issued by Renai Medicity said the successful surgery was performed by a team of doctors led by Dr. Thomas Varghese. The patient, Murukesan, was a gardener at the Thrissur zoo and did not go for treatment earlier, fearing loss of sight. But the lump on the nasal bridge grew into a grotesque mass, forcing him to seek surgical intervention.

The 12-hour-long surgery at the junction of the nose and base of the skull was followed by microvascular surgery to reconstruct the face. Neurosurgeon Dr. P. Subramaniam, palliative and microvascular surgeon Dr. Jose Tharayil and anaesthetist Dr. Santosh Mohan were part of the team. — Staff Reporter
