Collector to inspect Vyttila Junction every two days

The pothole-ridden Vyttila Junction and damaged parts of service roads will be covered with concrete paver blocks by June 30, it was decided at a meeting convened here on Sunday by District Collector K. Mohammed Y. Safirulla.

Earlier, he inspected the progress of repair work taken up belatedly by the Public Works Department (NH wing), which has extensively barricaded the junction to construct a flyover. “The district administration has fixed timelines to complete each component of repair work at Vyttila, to ensure time-bound compliance by the PWD. I will inspect the junction every two days, to assess the progress of repair work and the work under way to raise the service road on the junction’s southern side to the level of NH Bypass,” he told The Hindu, after a meeting with PWD officials and the police at the traffic watch tower at Vyttila Junction.

An order has been issued to PWD officials to speed up work and to strictly adhere to timelines. The Kerala Water Authority (KWA) has been asked to repair a few gaping potholes at the underpass of Vyttila railway overbridge, since they were slowing down the movement of vehicles, added Mr. Safirulla.

Paving of concrete blocks on one side of the junction towards Palarivattom has been completed, reducing snarls on the junction’s northern side. The service road on the junction’s Aroor side (south-western side) will be raised to the level of the NH Bypass and iron frames cleared, latest by July 12. The next site inspection and review meeting will be held on Tuesday.

Those who participated in the meeting include Assistant Commissioner of Traffic Police Abdul Salam and PWD engineers Jayaraj and Nishamol.

The junction has been witnessing maddening snarls since the PWD began piling in December for the flyover without doing any preparatory work. This drew much flak from road users, while the social media was abuzz with trolls criticising the government and the PWD for the serpentine snarls.
