January 18, 2019 12:56 am | Updated 12:56 am IST - KOCHI

The Synod of the Syro-Malabar Catholic Church has demanded steps for protecting the rights of Dalit Christians. The refusal of the authorities to protect their rights amounted to religious discrimination, the Synod noted.

The meeting decided to effectively implement educational support programme for children from Dalit families. The government policies were creating a crisis in the education sector. The LDF government was also following the policy of not creating the posts of teachers and ratifying the appointment of teachers, it said.

The various dioceses and congregations of the Syro-Malabar Church together raised ₹188 crore for flood relief. It appreciated the government approach of providing support for the flood-hit irrespective of their caste and religious affiliations. The church will contribute another ₹1.13 crore to the Chief Minister's Distress Relief Fund, said a communication.
