Project to support engineering dropouts

Remedial coaching, job training planned

September 05, 2011 08:44 pm | Updated 08:44 pm IST - KOTTAYAM:

Mahatma Gandhi University is mulling over the feasibility of introducing a project intended to support the dropouts of engineering courses, especially those from the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes categories, across the country.

According to the university authorities, the proposal is a unique academic experiment in the larger canvass of the increasing number of dropouts, which is estimated to be as high as 15 to 20 per cent, from various undergraduate engineering streams. Moreover, the system also aims at addressing the alarming situation of those, mostly from financially disadvantaged sections, who have resorted to assistances from banks.

The university proposes to offer special assistance to such students through remedial coaching, alternative studies or job oriented programmes to overcome the academic impasse.

A meeting to this effect will be held at the University Assembly hall at 10 a.m. on Tuesday. Dropout students from any university in the country may attend the programme to enable the university to chalk out a proper platform for supporting their needs, according to university authorities.
