Municipal vice-chairman blames contractor for delay

A shopping mall-cum-multiplex, which is likely to give the much needed impetus to making Thripunithura compete with Kochi in attracting visitors, has been in the making for over five years now.

The project was more than half completed by the previous municipal council led by R. Venugopal as chairman. While the work was speeded up in the last few months, the revenue loss to the municipality owing to the delay should be accounted for, he said.

Municipal vice-chairman O.V. Salim told The Hindu that the project was nearing completion. Mr. Salim, however, said there was a procedural delay when the contractor failed to honour the agreement. The tedious procedures of changing the contractor had led to the delay, he pointed out.

Mr. Venugopal said the project was totally redesigned from a community hall to a shopping mall plus multiplex by the previous council. Two floors of the building were completed with parking facilities for 80 cars. All that was to be done was to get the roof done and hand over the building to contractors for making it as per the design of a multiplex, he said.

“It took just about eight months to complete two floors, while the present council has been dragging the work for over four years to build just one more floor. An inquiry should be made into why the contractor could not take up the work or why there were no contractors to take up the project,” he said.
