In view of the rising number of jaundice and dengue fever cases reported from the region, a pre-monsoon cleaning drive focussing on residential areas in Ernakulam will be launched on May 14.

A decision in this regard was taken at a meeting of the District Planning Council here on Wednesday. District panchayat president Asha Sanil presided over the meeting. Addressing the meeting, District Collector K. Mohammed Y. Safirulla sought the support of residents associations, elected representatives and officials concerned to make the initiative a great success. Explaining the programme, District Medical Officer said the onus was on the residents to keep their area clean through proper waste management. They should also ensure that there were no mosquito breeding points on their premises by carrying out clearing and de-clogging works on a routine basis.

An awareness campaign will also be lauched to drive home the need to keep one’s environs clean for a disease-free monsoon, which brings with it a number of waterborne and vectorborne diseases. Earlier, the meeting approved the programmes initiated by the Mulanthuruthy and Kadamakkudy grama panchayats.

Speaking on the occasion, the District Collector said the local bodies would be given a chance to explain their innovative projects at the meetings of the District Planning Council .
