A small stretch of the river Periyar, downstream of the Pathalam regulator-cum-bridge, ran black after a shutter of the regulator was opened on Tuesday.

Activists, who happened to be on the Pathalam regulator-cum-bridge before noon, observed that black water rushing into the river downstream when officials of the Irrigation Department opened a shutter of the regulator. “The oily black discharge was accompanied by a foul smell too,” said Purushan Eloor, a resident of the area and environmental activist and member of the Periyar Malineekarana Virudha Samithi. The shutter was closed soon, said Maheshkumar V. B, an activist with Janajagratha.

An official of the Irrigation Department claimed that the opening of shutter was a routine process. “We open the shutter three times a week, depending on several factors such as high tide and water flow from the Bhoothathankettu dam,” said Balu Varghese, assistant executive engineer. “Sometimes, there is a colour change, and sometimes not”.
