February 11, 2012 10:53 am | Updated 10:53 am IST - KOCHI:

As part of the ongoing drive against unauthorised parking, the City Traffic Police (West) have issued stickers to owners parking their vehicles on footpaths.

On Wednesday, 223 persons were given notice and Rs.34,800 was collected as fine. On Thursday, 201 petty cases were filed and Rs.26,500 was collected as fine. The police have decided to use stickers on erring vehicles, as only smaller vehicles could be towed away using recovery vans. Between September 2011 and January 2012, Rs.9.52 lakh was collected from Kochi city through this drive.

Those finding stickers on their windscreens should report to a police station at the earliest and remit the fine, failing which they will be issued reminder cards and later summons from the court.

The City Traffic Police are also planning an awareness campaign with the help of Student Police Cadets from 11 schools. The campaign will be aimed at pedestrians and two-wheeler users, said V.M. Mohammed Rafique, Assistant Commissioner of Police, City Traffic (West).
