Police seek custody of temple theft accused

Search on for two more who fled with stolen ornaments

The police team probing the theft at two temples near North Paravur have filed a custody application with the Sasthamkotta Judicial First Class Magistrate, Kollam, for the three persons who were arrested in connection with the case.

The accused are Arunraj from North Paravur, Akhilesh alias Ajmal Sha from Kollam, and Santhosh from Thiruvananthapuram. They were arrested by Excise personnel in a Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) case on Wednesday.

Officials said the police were also on the lookout for Shaji Mathew and Mahesh, the two other accused in the theft and who are suspected to have fled with the sacred ornaments from the temple.

The accused were on their way to the Karunagappally railway station when they were intercepted. “They were planning to flee to other States. The remaining accused were supposed to meet them at the railway station, but they never turned up,” officials said.

Meanwhile, the Ernakulam Rural Police have sent an alert to all police stations.
