The successful effort by the Aluva traffic police in tracing and registering case against the crew of a private bus allegedly responsible for the serious injury suffered by an elderly woman may now help the victim claim insurance coverage for meeting her treatment expenses.
The injured was identified as Sarala Devi, 55, who suffered serious injury after being thrown off her seat in the back row, injuring her spine seriously in the impact, when the driver applied sudden brake.
She was travelling with her husband from Edappally to Aluva. The crew reportedly admitted her in a nearby hospital and surreptitiously left.
According to the police, the woman, hailing from a poor family, could hardly afford the expenses incurred for the treatment. The police registered a case invoking Section IPC 279 (rash driving) and IPC 338 (causing grievous hurt by act endangering life) based on a complaint filed by the injured.
However, it was no easy task for the police to trace the bus since neither the victim nor her husband could recollect the name of the bus. Neither did they possess the tickets to identify the bus. The police later examined the CCTV images from the local hospital where the bus crew had taken her and eventually traced them with the help of other bus crew and seized the bus.
