March 02, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 05:36 am IST - KOCHI:

The Lakshadweep administration has prepared a 2030 perspective plan for the group of islands. The plan has been submitted to the Union government for approval, said Vijay Kumar, Administrator, here on Tuesday. He was speaking on the sidelines of the first buyer-seller meet organised for farmers and fishermen from the islands here.

He said that the perspective plan, among other things, envisaged periodic induction of new vessels to improve connectivity to the mainland.

He said the islands also planned to improve the connectivity through a higher capacity air link.

Air India had finalised plans to launch the services of a 70-seater airplane between Kochi and Agatti soon.

The Lakshadweep islands were also looking to improve its tourism business though the islands have limited carrying capacity. The tourism business model is high value, low volume, he added.

As part of its efforts to improve connectivity, digital capacity for the islands was being improved, said Mr. Kumar.
