Parliamentary panel takes stock at Chennamangalam

Govt., district administration appreciated for rescue, rehabilitation operations

The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Finance chaired by M. Veerappa Moily, MP, visited Chennamangalam panchayat, one of the worst affected in the recent floods, on Thursday.

Karimpadam Weaving Cooperative Society, Pereppadam Kizhakkumpuram Khadi Production Centre and Chennamangalam panchayat office were visited by the committee.

The committee was accompanied by Revenue Additional Chief Secretary P.H. Kurian, District Collector K. Mohammed Y. Safirulla, Sub Collector Snehil Kumar Singh, Deputy Collector (disaster management) D. Sheela Devi and North Paravur tahsildar C.H. Hareesh.

Mr. Moily said the State government, the District Collector and other officials deserved appreciation for the rescue and rehabilitation operations conducted during and after the floods. The visit was aimed at taking stock of the problems being faced by the people of Chennamangalam and to fast-track their rehabilitation. Necessary measures would be taken immediately in consultations with various departments, said Mr. Moily.

He said the livelihood of people in the area remained hit and it should be immediately restored. Consultations need to be held in this connection with the Central and State governments. Mr. Moily guaranteed all possible measures to bring back smiles to the lives of the people of Chennamangalam.

Interaction held

The committee members interacted with workers of the Khadi unit at Pereppadam, which is yet to resume operations after being destroyed in the floods, leaving all seven employees, who work for daily wages of ₹120, jobless. The entire stock kept in the unit was lost.

Chennamangalam panchayat president T.G. Anoop and other office bearers informed the committee about the losses and the assistance needed to return to normalcy.
