Eateries operating at Panampilly Nagar are set to come under the scanner of the civic body. This is in the wake of rising complaints against illegal operation of commercial firms in the residential area.

The health standing committee of the Kochi Corporation will inspect the licences of the eateries.

In her reply to a debate in the corporation council meeting held on Wednesday, Mayor Soumini Jain said that the engineering section of the civic body would examine whether buildings with residential permits had been illegally converted to commercial establishments.

Mixed zone

Antony Painuthara and P.D. Martin, councillors from the Panampilly Nagar area, accused the corporation of not coming clean on its status though the State government had announced the area as a mixed zone, thus putting residents and shop owners alike to hardship.

Ro-Ro services

The delay in signing an agreement with Kerala Shipping and Inland Navigation Corporation Ltd. (KSINC) on Ro-Ro services on the Fort Kochi-Vypeen route and the challenges posed due to the influx of migrant workers to the city also came up for discussion.

Title deeds

A special council session will be held on July 17 to discuss the issue of title deeds to 64 families residing in Thuruthy Colony of Fort Kochi.

Ms. Jain told the meeting that the finer details of the matter would be presented before the special council. Leader of the Opposition K.J. Antony alleged that the families were being denied their legitimate right to title deeds despite residing in the colony for more than 65 years.

He accused the corporation of deliberately playing delaying tactics by sitting on the file.

Noisy scenes

Though works standing committee chairman P.M. Haris tried to assuage the concerns of the Opposition councillors, they were in no mood to relent, creating a furore over the issue.

This forced the Mayor to convene a conciliatory meeting of the standing committee chairpersons of the corporation, Opposition Leader and division councillor at the end of which it was decided to convene a special session.
