Organs donated by Binu Krishnan, 34, from Vyttila, on Friday gave a new lease of life to five terminal-stage patients in the State on Friday.

Binu of Mabrayil Veedu was declared brain dead on Thursday night a week after being admitted in a critical condition to Aster Medcity following intra-cerebral bleed. He was working in the marketing division of a private company. He was on his way to work on October 14 when he developed brain haemorrhage.

Binu’s wife Sini and brother gave consent for donating his organs. His heart was airlifted to Metro Hospital, Kozhikode, by a private air ambulance by Friday afternoon. One kidney and pancreas went to patients at Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences, while the other kidney was transplanted on a patient at the Government Medical College at Kottayam. Binu’s liver was donated to a patient at Aster.

The organ harvesting was done in the morning by a team of doctors after the relatives agreed to the donation. Necessary procedures were completed by the Kerala Network of Organ Sharing under the State government’s Mrithasanjeevani programme.
