A one-day symposium on management of STEMI heart attacks (ST elevation myocardial infarction) was held here on Sunday.
Dr. Sameer Mehta, chairperson of Lumen Foundation and Lumen Global, addressed the cardiologists at the meeting organised by the department of cardiology, Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences. Dr. Sameer said the foundation wanted to establish “heart attack networks” across Kerala on the lines of its activities in America and Europe. The objective was to offer the best and fastest treatment to patients who suffer heart attacks. The focus will be on reducing the time from the arrival of the patient in the emergency room to the opening up of the blocked artery in the cathlab. According to data from various sources, there was an epidemic of non-communicable diseases over the past decade. Along with the rising number of diabetic patients, more young people were falling prey to heart attacks, he said.
The Lumen Foundation is an organisation of physicians across the world helping persons who suffer heart attacks, by networking with doctors, hospitals and training. The foundation has created population-based STEMI initiatives and telemedicine-based AMI networks, enhancing global STEMI education research and training.
