Nurses at Amrita on strike

December 07, 2011 01:09 pm | Updated 01:09 pm IST - KOCHI:

A flash strike by nurses at the Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences turned violent as the nurses clashed with the police who were called in to control the crowds. Two persons were injured in the melee.

The nurses had gone on strike as leaders of the newly-formed United Nurses' Association said that they were allegedly beaten up by the hospital staff when they reached there for talks with prior appointment. Talks had yet to resolve the issue regarding the dismissal of a nurse and transfer of yet another one, Sudeep Krishnan, state secretary of the Association, told The Hindu .

The hospital authorities declined to comment on the issue. Sources said that a male nurse was suspended after many complaints were received against him. According to sources, 110 female and 90 males nurses had joined the strike.
