: Mahatma Gandhi University’s experiment with the open book examination to check copy cats will kick-start this November.
Students of its University College of Engineering at Thodupuzha will walk into the exam halls with textbooks and study materials for their first semester B. Tech Engineering Graphics paper.
“We have cleared the proposal. The decision to offer the open book system for engineering graphics paper was taken based on the inference that it had the highest failure rate among the affiliated colleges of the university. In some colleges, it was less than 10 per cent,” Vice Chancellor Babu Sebastian told The Hindu .
Faculty members close to the latest development pointed out that they will publish the list of textbooks that could be taken inside the hall for the engineering graphics exam well in advance. Exact replica questions and answers in the textbooks will not be re-produced in the exam question paper, they said.
Prof. Sebastian said the open book examination will be introduced for other exams after analysing the result of the engineering graphics examination to be held in November-December. A restricted open book examination will be tested in a few examinations both at the undergraduate and post-graduate levels, he said.
Candidates will be allowed to bring in one book and a maximum of two sheets of notes prepared for the examination as part of the limited open book pattern.
The Boards of Studies, which are expected to meet in the first week of September, will finalise the question paper format for the open book examinations to be held in the new academic year.
The varsity is considering a proposal, where objective type questions will be replaced by essay questions for those examinations held on the basis of the open book system.
