Come June and the postgraduate students of Mahatma Gandhi University could walk in to the exam halls with study materials.
The varsity has cleared the proposal to introduce open book examination for its postgraduate courses in the new academic year. The move comes close on the heels of the earlier decision taken last year to have open book examination for the first semester B.Tech Engineering graphics paper.
Restricted format
“It will be a restricted open book exam format for postgraduate students. They could go in to the exam halls with a maximum of three books,” Vice Chancellor Babu Sebastian told The Hindu on Thursday.
A meeting of the senior varsity officials and heads of boards of studies to be held in April will give the final nod for the proposal. Mr. Sebastian said that the meeting would also select the papers that would be brought under the open book format. The varsity had already proposed a new syllabus for postgraduate programmes in the new academic year.
“One paper in each semester would be an open book exam. A postgraduate student will hence write four open book examinations before completing his postgraduate programme,” he said.
The varsity would publish the list of textbooks that could be taken inside the hall well in advance. The exact replica questions and answers in the textbooks will not be reproduced in the exam question paper. The varsity is considering a proposal where objective type questions will be replaced by essay questions for those examinations held on the basis of the open book system.
