The Local Administration Department has provided administrative sanction for building a housing colony on a land belonging to the Greater Cochin Development Authority (GCDA) in Rameswaram village to rehabilitate residents of P&T Colony. The administrative sanction has been provided for the proposal costing approximately ₹15.84 crore.

GCDA chairman V. Saleem said the detailed project report for the project would be prepared by experts from the Indian Institute of Technology Madras and that the report on the foundation for the project was prepared by experts from College of Engineering, Thiruvananthapuram.

He also said that work on the project was expected to begin in about two weeks. The foundation for the project was laid earlier.

The government order dated July 11 providing administrative sanction for the housing project said that the project was being included in the Life Mission programme.

The project will be implemented by building 88 housing units in two blocks. The project will help rehabilitate a total of 85 families.

Life Mission will sanction funds for the project. Besides, fund will also be provided through the Pradhan Mantri Awaz Yojana (Urban) programme of the Centre. Corporate responsibility funds and sponsorship are also expected to contribute to the completion of the programme, said the government order.

The project will rehabilitate a group of people who are living in difficult housing conditions in the middle of the city.

The government order said that the work on the housing complex could be carried out by the Greater Cochin Development Authority directly as it had an engineering department.

The estimated cost of each of the housing unit with a plinth area of 500 sq.ft. is ₹10.5 lakh.

The area where the housing project is planned has deficient soil bearing capacity and any extra cost on laying the foundation will be met through sponsorship.
