None of the candidates in 14 Assembly constituencies in the district filed nominations on Friday.
Though Jose Maveli, who is contesting from Aluva as an Independent candidate of the Janaseva Congress, approached the Returning Officer to file his nomination, but it was not accepted, as it was already past 3 p.m. Nominations are accepted only between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.
Nominations will not be accepted on Saturday, as it is a bank holiday. Since they will not be accepted on Sunday either, candidates can submit nominations from Monday onwards. Meanwhile, anti-defacement squads deployed in the district removed as many as 1,113 illegally placed campaign materials.
Among the items removed were 952 posters, 116 flex boards and 45 banners. Most campaign materials had been removed from Muvattupuzha constituency, followed by 262 in Piravom, 142 in Kochi, and 122 in Vypeen.
As many as 85 campaign items were seized from Kothamangalam, 43 from Thrikkakara, 41 from Kalamassery, 40 from Thripunithura, and 36 each from Perumbavoor, Paravur, and Ernakulam constituencies.
Images on EVMs
People can cast vote by seeing the photographs of candidates on the electronic voting machines (EVMs).
Ballots to be used in EVMs will display the images of candidates along with their names and symbols. Candidates have been asked to submit their photographs while filing nominations.
Candidates who file incomplete affidavits will be deemed disqualified. Also, they are required to file separate affidavits on the debts they owe to the government.
While the accuracy of information provided in the affidavit will not be a factor for disqualification, incomplete affidavits will be.
The second affidavit should be attested by a notary on a stamp paper.
Those who have attained the age of 25 years or above on the day of scrutiny will be eligible to contest.
Emergency help
Families of polling officials who die while on election duty will be granted an emergency aid of Rs.25,000.
Families of officials who are maimed during duty will also be eligible for aid of the same amount, depending on the nature of the injury.
