NGT to consider Periyar case today

Fresh instances of discolouration of the Periyar have been reported at a time when the Southern Zone Bench of the National Green Tribunal (NGT) is considering a petition on the river pollution.

The Bench comprising P. Jyothimani and R. Nagendran will consider on Monday a case filed by Shibu Manuel, secretary of the Green Action Force, Udyogamandal, Eloor South, against the pollution by some industrial units functioning near the river bank.

Two weeks ago, the NGT had asked the member secretary of the Kerala State Pollution Control Board and a senior officer of the Board, to be present before it on Monday when the case would be taken up.

The Board was also directed to produce the pollution monitoring data of two public sector firms and a private firm located near the river.

The Bench observed in its order that the “files show the cumulative effect that all is not well with water” in the Periyar and the Board has not performed its function in controlling the pollution caused by some private companies.

The counsel for the petitioner submitted that there were “247 chemical factories in the area and they are discharging their untreated trade effluents into the River Periyar which makes the water non drinkable and the people living on the banks of the river Periyar are the worst affected.”
