Close to 20 accident-prone ‘black spots’ in Ernakulam will have an enhanced safety and enforcement cover to cut down road accidents.

The Motor Vehicles Department (MVD) will step up vigil at these spots in the coming days. The black spots in the district include Vyttila Kannadikadavu stretch, Edappally, Kalamassery, Kariyadu, Karukutty, Karayamparambu, Varappuzha, Infopark, Puthenkurisu, Thrikkalathur, and Kalady.

Seaport-Airport Road, Container Road, Vypeen Munambam road, NH 17 Varappuzha-Moothakunnam road, Muvattupuzha-Perumbavoor road, Thripunithura-Muvattupuzha road, and Muvattupuzha-Kothamangalam road too find place in the list of highly dangerous stretches, according to MVD estimate.

Meanwhile, officials are using a multi-pronged strategy to reduce accidents reported from these regions. Besides deploying more officers at these spots, the MVD will streamline checking and track the speed of vehicles. Those found overspeeding will be penalised.

Efforts are also on to improve lighting on roads that lack the facility to prevent accidents at night. Moreover, motorists will be advised against overtaking and using mobiles while driving. The objective is to make roads safe and secure, according to officials.
