Heaps praise on youths who joined rescue operations

The leading lights of the voluntary team of rescue operators from fishermen community were honoured at a function held in the city on Sunday. “These fishermen have been described aptly as the ‘soldiers of Kerala’ by the Chief Minister,” said J. Mercykutty Amma, Minister for Fisheries.

Congratulating the fishermen, she reminded the gathering that it was an occasion to absorb the community of fishermen into the larger society. The Minister also lauded youths who joined rescue operations during the recent flooding. “The fishermen along with the youth worked selflessly and tirelessly to rescue thousands of people who were stranded in their homes. It was a surge of goodwill that was witnessed during the operations,” Ms. Mercykuttyamma said.

Those honoured and presented with gifts at the function included fishermen on board Poomkavanam, the boat that was used to save around 4,000 stranded people. Those who manned boats like Japamala, Udaya Sooryan, and Velankanni Matha were among those who were honoured.

The Minister also said it was an occasion for society to think in terms of fishermen’s welfare. “Their difficulties include poor catch and rough weather,” she added.

Participating in the function, K.V. Thomas, MP, said fishermen worked without fear and selflessness during rescue operations. MLAs S. Sarma, Hibi Eden, and V.D. Satheesan, and CPI(M) leader P. Rajeeve offered felicitations.
