Milma to set up 11 milkoscan machines

Apex milk cooperative Milma will set up 11 milkoscan machines as well as a state-of-the-art quality testing laboratory at Edappally with financial backing from the Union Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying.

The facilities involve a total expenditure of ₹17.35 crore, including ₹8 crore for the laboratory, Milma sources said on Sunday. They said that work on the Edappally facility was expected to begin at the end of October. The facility will help detect any adulteration of milk. It will be accredited by the National

Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories allowing the Edappally facility to test and issue certificates on any samples brought from outside.

Milkoscan machines, costing approximately ₹85 lakh apiece, will be set up at Edappally, Kottayam, Thrissur, Kattappana, Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Alappuzha, Kozhikode, Wayanad and Kannur.

The state-of-the-art laboratories are being set up in 18 States across the country in response to widespread adulteration of milk in various States.

The Milma official said that Kerala had not seen large-scale adulteration. However, adulteration had been detected during the last Onam season and some consignments were returned after they were tested at the State border check-posts, the official added.

The State requires about 1.5 lakh litres of milk per day from other States. The Malabar region has a surplus of about 1.25 lakh litres per day while the Ernakulam and Thiruvnanathapuram regions have deficiency.
