B.Com remains varsity's much-sought after programme

: The flagship B.Com programme retained its position as the most popular academic programme offered by the affiliated colleges of Mahatma Gandhi University in the new academic year.

A whopping 2.32 lakh applications were received for the course against the 9,850 seats available under the Centralised Allotment Process (CAP) for commerce courses.

The highest index mark for B.Com model I was 968. About 13,761 students chose B.Com model I Finance and Taxation course as their first option.

As per the official data available with the CAP cell, B.A. Economics is the second most popular course. About 74,573 students applied for the programme having about 1,764 seats under the online allotment process. The highest index mark for B.A. Economics model I course shot up from 1,450 in 2013-14 to 1,465 in 2015-16.

The popularity of the B.A. English course soared in the new academic year, with about 70,379 students applying for the 2,349 seats under the CAP.

The highest index mark leaped for the programme went up to 1,633 from 1,613 in 2013-14.

Six affiliated colleges had candidates whose index marks crossed the 100 per cent for the B.A. English programme.

For the B.A. Economics and B.Com courses, nine colleges each had talents whose index marks were 100 per cent or above.

The B.Sc courses in Physics and Chemistry were the most preferred among the science undergraduate programmes. Four colleges had candidates whose index marks crossed the 1,000 mark for the B.Sc Chemistry programme. About 26,724 students had got admission in the first allotment under the online single window process for admission to the undergraduate courses. Over 28,600 seats are available under CAP in the affiliated colleges of the varsity.
