Media organisations should be sensitive in their portrayal of women, said Lissy Jose, member of the Kerala Women’s Commission. “All media organisations should formulate a media policy that ensures gender sensitive representations of women. The commission is ready to extend all help in that direction,” Ms. Jose said at the inauguration of the ‘Women in Media’ seminar organised by the commission and the Ernakulam Press Club in Kochi on Thursday.
“Women find it difficult to build their careers not because of any lack of ability, but due to the many challenges they face in their workplaces,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police R. Nishanthini. She said women were often subjected to character assassination and the media could work to ensure that society was sensitised to women’s issues. She said even news organisations contributed to objectifying women and sensationalizing issues to fit stereotypes.
Deputy Mayor B. Bhadra said at the inaugural function that the corporation had started ‘Jagratha’ cells in every ward to find solutions to women’s problems.
Women’s Commission Director A. Anilkumar spoke at the function attended by media persons, students, and others. Prominent journalists and media critics led sessions on role of women in media organisations and representation of women through media.
