Face masks were distributed to several traffic wardens in the city at a function held here on Saturday. The masks, which cover the nose and mouth, were handed over to the wardens by Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala at a function at the Rajiv Gandhi Indoor Stadium here.

The Minister spoke to the wardens about their issues and inaugurated the distribution of masks by helping a warden put it on. Mr. Chennithala said the masks would help protect the wardens from poisonous gases while they were on duty. Deputy Commissioner of Police R. Nishanthini too was present at the function.

The masks were sponsored by the Rotary Club. The wardens also used the opportunity to inform the Minister of some of the problems faced by them. “We spend hours out in the hot sun breathing the poisonous fumes emitted by vehicles. But there are irregularities in our pay,” said a traffic warden in the city.
