The Kochi City Police on Sunday arrested a 49-year-old man for allegedly threatening and extorting two women and a man by posing as an officer of the Research and Analysis Wing (RAW).
The accused is Baiju Paul, a native of Wayanad. He resides at Vennala. The police also seized an air-pistol from him.
The alleged incident took place at a hotel on the Edappally-Vyttila bypass on Saturday. Paul approached the trio by introducing himself as a RAW agent and seized their identity cards, wallets, and mobile phones.
While the phones were returned, the accused allegedly fled with the other valuables.
During interrogation, Paul confessed to have approached the trio as a RAW agent. “Since a pistol was also recovered from him, we are looking into whether the accused is a repeat offender,” said a police officer.
Paul was booked under Sections 392 (robbery), 342 (wrongful confinement) and 419 (cheating by impersonation) of the IPC. He was presented before a magistrate and remanded in judicial custody.
