How about a movie theatre complete with the screen, seats, and of course, the movie itself, emerging out from a box packed into the backside of an autorickshaw?

Such a sight, perhaps as engrossing as the movie itself, is in store for movie buffs in the city, as Rick Show, the concept of movie on wheels developed by French artist Le Gentil Garçon, rolls in for screenings at multiple locations here next week.

Screenings of five movies from the art film collections in France and Switzerland will be held at Subhash Park on March 27 and Vasco da Gama square on March 30 from 6.30 p.m.

The event is being organised jointly by Alliance française de Trivandrum, the French language and cultural centre in Kerala, and Arts Space Kochi of the Kochi Corporation.

The idea is to popularise cinema, especially independent cinema, using the common man’s vehicle. Rick Show has been designed and manufactured with expert inputs from French artists. The design department of the College of Architecture in Thiruvananthapuram also associated with it.

The project has the larger goal of taking independent cinema to hinterlands and communities with little screening facilities. It is likely to be a unique experience coming as it does after the pandemic forced the closure of theatres for more than a year.

Rick Show is being organised in connection with the fourth edition of Bonjour India, which is an Indo-French artistic, cultural, educational and social collaboration put together by the French cooperation network in India mainly comprising of the Embassy of France and its cultural service, Institut Français en Inde, the Alliance Française network, and the Consulates of France.

The latest edition is conceived as the celebration of the India’s 75th year of independence and 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

Around 120 programmes are being staged across 19 Indian cities as part of Bonjour India. Rick show will proceed to Pune followed by Kolkata after winding up its schedule here.
