Over 170 children from six districts participate in event

Young chess aspirants flocked The Hindu In School Chess Competition 2018 held here on Thursday.

There were over 170 participants from Palakkad, Malappuram, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Kottayam and Alappuzha.

Abhinav Chakrapani Santhalayan topped the Under-15 open category and Eldho Skaria of KV, Port Trust, came second. The third place went to Adarsh Sreekumar of Rajagiri H.S.S., Kalamassery.

In the Under-13 category, Hari R. Chandran of Chinmaya Vidyalaya, Vaduthala, won the first prize. Surya Salim of Amrita Vidyalaya, Edappally, came second, and Rahan Ramesh of Naipunnya, Kakkanad, came third.

Pranav Chandra Mohan of Chavara Darshan, Kunammavu, topped the Under-11 category. Giridhar A. of S.N.V. Sanskrit H.S.S., North Paravur, got the second prize, and Nihal Nithish of Campion School, Edappally, won the third prize. In the Under-9 open category, Atul Krishna M. of St. Patrick’s, Manjapara, won the top prize. Satyaki G. Gokul of Bhavan’s Vidya Mandir, Poochatty, Thrissur, came second and Manav Kirsi Binoy of Mahatma UPS., Porathissery, Thrissur, came third.

Consolation prizes

In all the open categories, seven consolation prizes were given.

Among girls, Arya Nanda Biswas from Al-Ameen, Edappally, got the first prize in Under-15 category and Mayoogha N. of Government Victoria Girls, Chittoor, Palakkad, bagged the second prize.

Archana M.E. of Government Girls V.H.S.S., Wandoor, Malappuram, got the first prize in Under-13 category while Sasha T. Sujo of Gregorian School, Maradu, came second.

In Under-11category, Rithika R. of SDV Central, Alappuzha, got the first prize and Twinkle Riju of SH CMI Public School, Thevara, bagged the second prize. The Under-9 category had Athira A.J. of Vijayagiri P.S., Ashtamichira, and Pournami S. of KV, Kanjikode, bagging the first and second prizes respectively.

Under-15 girls had one consolation prize while there were two consolation prizes each in other categories.

Thyrocare was the national sponsor of the competition and Camlin Kokuyo was the title sponsor. The competition was held with the support of Kerala Chess Association affiliated to the All India Chess Federation.

Oberon Mall was the venue partner for the event while BPCL Kochi Refinery was the regional sponsor of the event. Bikash Babu Sweets was the snack partner.

Ameer P.S. was the chief arbiter of the tournament, while Subha Rakesh was the deputy chief arbiter. Kannan M., chairman, Chess In School, Kerala, Martin Samuel, district secretary, Ernakulam Chess Association, Ajmal P.A., treasurer, ECA, Sibin K.R., Sreejith, Bismi Ajay, Sunitha Ajay Shenoy and Varsha M were the other arbiters in the tournament.

General Manager of Oberon Mall Joji John was the guest of honour at the prize distribution function.
