Things seem to be looking up for the farming sector in Ernakulam, courtesy to a novel initiative by the district Kudumbasree mission.

With a view to promote women agripreneurs in the district, the agency has embarked on a programme providing specialised training for a select group of women in mechanised agricultural practices. As many as 150 women, selected from all the block panchayats in the district, will attend the technical training in the first phase.

According to Ramya, the programme consultant, the objective is to propagate farm mechanisation in local-levels and thereby equip the women to take up women-focused development projects in farms. ``With focus on less manual labour, more profit, improved health and more leisure time, these women farmers should be able to make use of the women friendly agro machineries and reap benefits’’, she explained.

The three-day training, being executed with the help of the Krishi Vigyan Kendra in Ernakulam, will enable the women to take up different farming operations such as weeding, soil preparation or threshing using modern machines without any drudgery but with enhanced efficiency and skill.

As part of the initiative, the Kudumbasree has identified the machines that are ideal for the use of women, ease their workload and stress, increase their efficiency and profit and thereby sustain them in farming. The trained farmers will be given machines through the farmer facilitation centres to be established at each of the gram panchayaths.

Further, it also plans to set up a society to take up mechanised rice farming at the local-level, which will set the guidelines for seasonal machine use.

Tany Thomas, Coordinator, Kudumbasree Mission Ernakulam said the successful empowerment of women farmers with women-friendly farm machines would be instigate more such group. ``We hope that more women agripreneurs will come forward to take training which is beneficial for food grain production as well as empowerment of rural women’’, she said.
