The mantle of constructing a four-lane road from Chakkaraparambu to Seaport-Airport Road has fallen on Kerala State Construction Corporation (KSCC).

It was earlier envisaged as a Roads and Bridges Development Corporation of Kerala (RBDCK) project. A recent meeting convened here by the district administration had decided to commence land acquisition that was expected to cost Rs.270 crore. The new corridor will provide an eastward link for Padma Junction-Pullepady-

Thammanam-Chakkaraparambu Road, decongesting Palarivattom-Kakkanad Road and Vyttila-Tripunithura Road.

The total project cost is Rs.421 crore, which is expected to be raised by Kerala Road Fund Board under PWD’s SPEED programme. A detailed project report and alignment for the four-km-long road was readied by RBDCK, taking care to avoid thickly-populated areas and places of worship. The road will pass through Vennala and Palachuvadu before reaching Seaport-Airport Road.

The access-controlled road will have a 30-metre width for 1.5 km from Chakkaraparambu up to Vennala-Eroor Road, while the rest of the alignment will have 45-metre width since most of the area is now paddy fields. It could later be extended up to Infopark.

As per the initial plan, land owners with small holdings will be given three cents of land, market rate as compensation and the cost of structure that will be taken over. A similar package will be given to those who surrender bigger plots.

Metro extension

A senior KSCC official said discussions with land owners would begin shortly. “The road project got the State government’s administrative sanction early this year. It is crucial since land acquisition for metro’s second phase extension to Kakkanad would be negligible if it is routed through a 4.50-metre wide median envisaged through the road’s centre. The road could be readied in less than three years if it was included as part of metro works, since most land owners would surrender land if it becomes a metro corridor,” he said.

Metro stakeholders have apprehensions about its Kakkanad extension through the narrow and heavily encroached Palarivattom-Kakkanad Road, where land acquisition is the single biggest problem.
