Fourteen school students and a teacher from Vidyodaya School at Thevakkal in the city suffered minor injuries after the bus in which they were travelling overturned at Pala on Saturday night.
The accident occurred around 8.45 p.m. when the students were on their way back after a one-day picnic to Vagamon in Idukki district. A total of 94 Class 11 students had gone on the trip in two contract carriages. The mishap took place on the Pala-Ettumanoor road near St. Thomas College when the driver of the bus in front attempted to negotiate a sharp turn. The bus skidded, fell on its side and dragged for a short distance before coming to a halt after hitting a tree on the roadside.
It is believed that over-speeding led to the accident. There were 44 students in the bus that was involved in the accident, the police said.
The students were soon rushed to the nearby Marian Medical Centre in private vehicles that were passing by.
