Cochin Port Trust, which ended the last financial year by making a net surplus of about ₹4 crore, has started the new year on a positive note with an increase of nearly six per cent in cargo throughput in April.
The port handled a total of 24,02,000 tonnes of cargo during April this year compared to 22,69,000 tonnes during April 2017.

Figures from Indian Ports Association said that the average cargo growth for the major ports in the country during the month of April stood at nearly two per cent. The major ports together handled 56.8 million tonnes during April 2018, which is a growth of 1.78% as against 55.8 million tonnes during the month of April last year.
The major ports, including Kolkata, Paradip, Visakhapatnam, New Mangalore and JNPT have registered positive growth in traffic. Haldia Dock Complex showed nearly 20%growth while Paradip showed a growth of 11.12%; Kamarajar port (Ennore) showed a growth of 12% and Chennai showed a growth of 7.55%. The highest growth was registered by Kolkata which was followed by Kamarajar.
Among the ports, Kandla handled the highest volume of traffic at 9.32 million tonnes. It was followed by Paradip with 8.15 million tonnes.
