The Kerala Catholic Bishops’ Council has said the incident where consecrated hosts from St. Jacob’s chapel in Arookutty were found in a dump was an incident that hurt Christians, who consider the host holy. In a statement issued here on Wednesday, the Bishops’ Council said the incident took place on the night of March 28. The hosts, kept in the sacristy, were stolen and dumped in a waste heap, the statement claimed.

The incident could be seen only as a planned attempt to hurt religious sentiments and that it should be taken seriously under the current circumstances, the Bishops said in the statement. They also expressed the hope that there would be a proper police inquiry into the incident and that the government would ensure such incidents did not recur.
