Slow pace: Work on Moolampally-Pizhala bridge has been dragging on over the past five years, say protesters.

Residents of Pizhala and neighbouring islands came together on Sunday to mark the launch of a public protest demanding the speedy completion of Moolampally-Pizhala bridge and completion of approach roads.

The protest was organised by Pizhala-Karimuttikkal Samara Samiti on the Pizhala school premises on Sunday. A spokesman for the Samiti said that work on the bridge has been dragging on over the past five years and there has been little progress in acquiring land for the approach road. Only acquisition of land would help the speedy completion of the bridge.

The spokesman also said that the Finance Department was yet to decide on the estimate for land acquisition. A leaflet distributed during the protest on Sunday described the isolation of islanders for over the past half-a-century ever since the Kadamakkudy panchayat was formed.

Threat of calamities

The islanders had to use boats to escape floodwaters recently. The spokesman said that the islanders would be safer with a bridge and a quick route for evacuation in case of natural calamities like the recent floods. Hundreds of fishermen on the island lost their livelihood during the floods. Around a hundred fish cages were swept away in strong currents during the floods.

Cage fish farming has become a big enterprise of late in Pizhala, Kadamakkudy and neighbouring areas.
