Residents of several islands in the Vembanad woke up to waters entering their homes in the early hours of Thursday. The island of Thanthonni Thuruth, near High Court Junction in the city, faced severe waterlogging during high tide.

“The water level was higher than it was during the flooding in 2018. However, the water receded by early morning,” said Reji T.S., a resident. All residents of the island, except those who chose to stay back, were shifted to a relief camp at Chathiath by evening. “The absence of a proper protective wall around the island is making it vulnerable to waterlogging,” added Mr. Reji.

High tide also brought water into the compounds of houses in the islands of Valanthakad, Korangotta, Kuthirakoor Kari, Mukkathukari and Kalluvechakaadu.
