High Court warns against absence of lawyers

May 21, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:56 am IST - KOCHI:

Expressing displeasure over the absence of lawyers appearing in a slew of criminal appeals, Justice K.T. Sankaran, who headed a Division Bench on Wednesday, warned the lawyers that if they did not appear for their clients before the court, it should be intimated to the appellants. In a letter to the High Court Registrar General, the judge pointed out that the appellants languishing in jails were not aware that their counsels were not appearing before the court.

The judge wrote the letter because when the Bench started its sitting at 10.15 a.m., no lawyer was present to argue the appeals. As many as 23 cases had been listed before the court.

The judge also pointed out that in many of the cases appellants used to send letters from jails to the High Court requesting to post criminal appeals for hearing.
