The Kerala High Court on Wednesday directed the Kochi Corporation to ensure that plant weeds and other waste are removed on a war footing from the Perandoor canal to avoid flooding in the city.

The court also directed the Corporation to take effective steps to remove weeds and other waste from other canals and drains in the city to ensure free flow of water.

The court directed the Corporation to file a report regarding the work being carried out before July 24.

The directives were passed on a writ petition filed by the residents of Karithala highlighting the apathy of the Corporation in cleansing the canal.

The petitioners alleged that the Gandhi Nagar Division and nearby areas were flooded during the rain because of blockage in canals

They sought a directive to the District Collector to take steps to clean the canals.
